Most shelving problems come down to anchoring. The first job on site is to find out what is behind the plaster. Studs, masonry, brick veneer and a sheeted-over cavity all need different anchors, and the difference between them is the difference between a shelf that holds and a shelf that comes off the wall with the contents on it.

Questions we get asked

Will the shelves hold what I want to put on them?

That depends on the wall and anchor used to attach the shelf. Keep in mind, the span matters as much as the fixing — a long shelf with no centre support will bow under weight no matter how well the ends are held.

My cupboard shelves are mouldy and sagging. Is that a shelving job?

Partly. The shelves are the easy half. The reason they have sagged is probably due to moisture, and if that is not dealt with the new ones will do the same. If the wall lining behind the shelves has failed, that has to be sorted before new shelves go in — and plaster work will most likely also be needed.

Can you build shelving to fit an odd space?

Yes, this is a very common job. Alcoves, corners, under-stair spaces and pantries are rarely square, and off-the-shelf units are made for rooms that are.

What finish do the shelves come in?

Raw, or primed ready for a painter. The pantry shelving shown on this page was left in raw hardwood because that suited the room.

How is the shelf fixed to the wall?

Into whatever is actually behind the plasterboard — studs where there are studs, into brick if there is brick.
