Grout does not hold tiles down. It fills the gap between the tiles and keeps water out of the gaps. The tile is held down by the bed underneath.

The first check on a tile repair job is tapping the tiles. A sound tile rings; one that has let go sounds hollow.

If the membrane beneath the bed has failed, a waterproofer will be needed to make the repair.

Questions we get asked

A few tiles have cracked. Does the whole floor need to come up?

Usually not. A cracked tile with sound bedding under it can be repaired. If you have a crack running through several tiles in a row this can indicate the slab or sheeting moving underneath.

My tiles sound hollow when I tap them. Is that bad?

This can mean that the bed has let go behind the tile.

Can you match grout on an old floor?

Yes, but not exactly as grout fades over time.
