# Fence repairs & paling replacement on the Gold Coast

Fences usually fail at the posts, not the palings. A post that has rotted at ground level will bring new palings down with it in the next storm, so the first thing we do is check every post along the fence line.

## Questions we get asked

### A few palings have gone. Do I need a new fence?

Probably not. Palings are easily replaced. A fence with sound posts is worth repairing.

### Can you add height or a screen to an existing fence?

Yes, if the posts and rails will carry it. Extra height is extra wind load, which is the thing people forget — a fence that has stood for fifteen years can fail in its first storm after being made taller on the same posts. The boundary fence shown on this page could take new panels because the posts were up to it.
